Unlock the Power of Relaxation with Homemade Chamomile Extract

In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments of calm and relaxation is more important than ever. Chamomile, a gentle and soothing herb, has been cherished for centuries for its calming properties. While chamomile tea is a popular way to enjoy its benefits, making homemade chamomile extract takes it to a whole new level. I highlight this recipe in my cookbook, but here it is below, to guide you through the process of creating your very own chamomile extract, allowing you to harness the full potential of this remarkable herb.

Why Chamomile Extract?

Chamomile extract is a concentrated form of the herb, allowing you to access a higher concentration of its active compounds. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a more potent and long-lasting effect. Additionally, by making your own extract, you have full control over the quality and purity of the ingredients, ensuring a truly authentic and natural product.

Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup: Fresh or dried chamomile flowers: Look for high-quality organic chamomile flowers, preferably in loose form. This will ensure the best flavor and potency.

  • 2 cups: High-proof alcohol: Vodka, brandy or whiskey with at least 40% alcohol content.  You can also use vegetable glycerine (for a non-alcoholic extract)

  • 20 oz glass jar with a tight-fitting lid: Choose a jar that is large enough to hold both the chamomile flowers and the alcohol. It is important to use glass as it does not react with the alcohol and helps maintain the extract's integrity.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Place the measured chamomile flowers into the sterilized jar.

  • Pour alcohol or glycerine over the flowers: Fill the jar with the high-proof alcohol, covering the chamomile flowers completely. Make sure the flowers are fully submerged.

  • Seal the jar: Secure the lid tightly on the jar, ensuring a proper seal. Shake the jar gently to mix the contents.

  • Place the jar in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Allow the chamomile flowers to steep in the alcohol for at least two weeks, shaking the jar occasionally to promote extraction.

  • After the steeping period, strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, removing the chamomile flowers. Transfer the extract into a clean, airtight glass bottle for storage.

  • Label the bottle with the date and contents. Store the chamomile extract in a cool, dark place, where it can last for up to a year.

ADDITIONALS:

Usage and Benefits:

  • Homemade chamomile extract can be used in various ways to promote relaxation and overall well-being. A few drops of the extract can be added to a warm cup of tea, used as a substitute for vanilla extract in any baking recipe, or incorporated into homemade skincare products.
